The Industry Beauty Interview: Our founder on changing the narrative around female hair loss

Hair thinning and hair loss remain some of the most emotionally complex and misunderstood challenges women face, particularly during periods of hormonal change. Megi Wellness was created to change that conversation.

In this interview with TheIndustry.beauty, founder and CEO Aneta Mortlock shares the personal journey that led to the brand’s creation, the science behind its system-led approach, and why education, transparency and evidence-based innovation sit at the heart of everything Megi Wellness does.

What inspired the creation of Megi Wellness?

Megi Wellness was born from my own personal experience with hair shedding and hormonally driven hair changes in my mid-forties, despite living a deeply health focused lifestyle. I realised that even when you are doing everything “right”, hair can still become one of the first places where internal imbalance shows up. As I began researching solutions, it became clear that the market was overwhelmingly geared towards male pattern hair loss, while female hair thinning linked to post pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause and post-menopausal years was rarely addressed in a meaningful or nuanced way.

There was very little conversation around the biological and hormonal complexity of female hair loss, and even less support that felt compassionate, credible or evidence led. Women were either offered cosmetic quick fixes to boost volume or were met with silence. I saw a real gap for a brand that treated female hair loss as a whole-body issue rather than a surface level concern. Megi Wellness was created to provide clarity, education and science backed solutions that support women through every life stage, without shame, fear or oversimplification.

Why did this feel important to address?

Hair thinning and hair loss affect millions of women, yet most solutions focus solely on improving the appearance of the hair rather than addressing why the hair is thinning in the first place. I was determined to tackle the root causes that are so often overlooked, including nutritional deficiencies, hormonal shifts, chronic stress, scalp health and changes in the hair growth cycle itself.

This felt deeply important because hair loss is not just a cosmetic issue. It can be emotionally distressing and isolating, particularly when women are left without clear explanations or practical guidance. Many are told that hair thinning is simply something they must accept, especially as they age. At Megi Wellness, our mission is to change that narrative. We help women understand what is happening inside their body, feel supported rather than overwhelmed, and regain a sense of control and confidence through a science led, holistic approach that respects the complexity of female biology.

Can you talk us through the science behind your products?

Our science led approach always starts with the scalp, as healthy hair growth depends on a balanced and well supported scalp environment. Across the range, we use essential minerals and fermented minerals, including zinc and iron, to help support the scalp microbiome. These are paired with ingredients such as caffeine and targeted botanical extracts to encourage microcirculation around the hair follicle.

We then incorporate clinically studied growth actives including AnaGain, CapiliaLonga, Capixyl and SymHair Restore, which are known to support the hair growth cycle while improving fibre strength, density and moisture retention. By combining peptides, amino acids, proteins and advanced humectants, we are able to address hair health from follicle to length, both internally and externally. This integrated approach sits at the core of the Megi Wellness philosophy.

What are the biggest myths you encounter around female hair loss and how are you helping - both through product and brand messaging?

One of the biggest myths is that hair loss is purely genetic or simply an inevitable part of ageing. While genetics can play a role, factors such as nutrition, stress, hormonal changes and environmental influences are often just as significant. Another misconception is that thinning hair can only be managed cosmetically, rather than biologically.

Through both our products and our brand education, we aim to normalise conversations around female hair health and provide practical, science backed guidance. For years, many brands addressed thinning hair primarily with volumising products, which may improve appearance temporarily but do little to support long term hair health. Today, innovation has moved forward. With consistent use, the right formulations and patience, it is possible to stimulate healthier hair growth and strengthen follicles over time. We are not promising overnight miracles, but we are committed to delivering visible improvement with consistency and care.

What would you consider your most meaningful achievement(s) in building Megi Wellness?

The most meaningful achievement has been the response from our community. Hearing from women who tell us that our products have helped restore not only their hair health but also their confidence is incredibly powerful. It validates the holistic and science led approach that sits at the heart of the brand.

I am particularly proud that I stayed true to my original vision, even when it made the manufacturing process more complex and challenging. Every product delivers genuine innovation rather than compromise. Seeing visible results in our customers and receiving heartfelt messages and emails continues to be deeply motivating and reinforces why Megi Wellness exists.

What has been the most challenging part of growing the business? What have you learnt?

One of the greatest challenges has been scaling the business while staying true to our values, particularly when balancing cashflow with stock commitments and ongoing product innovation. Developing high performance, science led formulas requires time, patience and significant investment, which can be demanding in the early stages of growth.

This experience has taught me the importance of clarity in decision making, choosing the right partners and remaining closely connected to our community. Listening carefully to customer feedback has been essential in ensuring that Megi Wellness continues to evolve in a way that is both relevant and resilient.

Where is Megi Wellness available in the UK? Are their plans or ambitions to expand further?

Megi Wellness is currently available online and through select premium retailers, with a growing presence in salons and wellness spaces. We are also in discussions with premium chain retailers. Expansion is very much part of our roadmap, both within the UK and internationally, while maintaining the high standards, quality and ethos that define the brand.

What are your wider ambitions for the business?

Beyond hair health alone, our ambition is to redefine modern hair wellness for both women and men through a deeply science led yet human approach. We aim to be a trusted authority that combines evidence based products available in retail, beautifully presented with a luxury feel, alongside education and holistic guidance.

Innovation in hair growth remains at the forefront of our development strategy, with three advanced product launches planned for 2026 and an exciting launch scheduled for 2027. Ultimately, our goal is simple and bold. We want Megi Wellness to help people grow healthier, stronger hair and feel confident throughout that journey.
